Do you ever think about what separates elite, professional level, hockey players from everyone else? Sure there can be lots of different things…with most of you probably immediately thinking talent. Which is probably true to a certain extent. Professional players are extremely talented and gifted, there’s no arguing that. But as we’ve discussed in various parts of this blog, there are lots of players who are extremely talented, but not all those players make it as far as they want.

So what is something else that separates the good from the great?

A winning mindset.

When I say winning mindset, I mean that undeniable desire to compete and win. People who have that winning mindset want to be the best at everything they do. Whether its hockey, tic-tac-toe, a game of cards… whatever it is they want to win.

Not only do they want to compete and win, they usually won’t stop trying until they do win. They will keep grinding and grinding until they get to the top.

This drive and work ethic is what helps make them so successful. They understand how to keep working when things get tough. If anything, when things get tough is when they push harder and their struggle turns into their motivation.

How do you work on building your winning mindset?

It starts with confidence. You have to believe in yourself and know that you’re willing to put in the work to be successful.

More often than not when you see someone having success and you think it just comes easy to them, you’re looking over the amount of work that is going in behind the scenes. And I’m talking about serious high level athletes, not your run of the mill, dominant peewee player.

The older you get the harder you have to work and want it in order to succeed.

You have to have a relentless work ethic that understands that there are going to be bumps in the road to success. Are you going to quit, or are you going to push through them? Players with a winning mindset always find a way to push through and stay the course no matter how turbulent it may be.

A winning mindset is something everyone can always be working and building on. The ability to always compete is often times the most important quality that coaches look for in players.
